Purpose of the Position

The Adult Discipleship Minister will work with the elders and ministry staff to provide leadership for the congregation in pursuing its mission of “Reaching the Lost, Teaching the Saved, and Repeating the Process,” while striving to uphold the church’s core values of Biblical authority, loving all people, faithful service, and unceasing prayer.

This position focuses on adult spiritual formation, outreach, pastoral care, and equipping the church for ministry and mission.

Qualifications
  • Must have a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a clear calling into ministry.
  • Must be a student of Scripture with the ability to communicate God’s Word through preaching and teaching.
  • Must have a passion for pastoral care and aiding in shepherding the church family.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work in harmony with others.
  • Must possess strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a ministry position in a church preferred.
  • BA/BS degree from an accredited Bible or Christian college preferred.
  • Must meet the Biblical qualifications for pastoral leadership (1 Timothy 3:1–10).
Responsible To

The Adult Discipleship Minister is responsible to the elders of First Christian Church and works in harmony with other ministry staff.

Job Responsibilities

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

Preaching and Teaching
  • Serve as part of the preaching team and preach approximately 26–30 weeks per year.
  • Teach adult Bible studies and baptism/covenant classes. In addition to conducting classes, work with the elders and mentor church family members to conduct these classes as well.
  • Mentor new believers in the faith. Instruct them to embrace basic tenets of the Christian faith, learn to adopt spiritual disciplines, and live out their calling as ambassadors of Christ in daily life. In addition to being a mentor, facilitate the recruiting and training of mature Christian volunteers to also mentor new believers.
  • Work with the worship minister to provide meaningful and biblically grounded worship experiences.
Discipleship and Small Groups
  • Work with the Christian Education Ministry Team to develop, implement, and coordinate adult discipleship and small group ministries.
  • Work with the Christian Education Ministry Team to recruit, train, schedule, and provide discipleship for volunteers.
  • Work with the Christian Education Ministry Team to coordinate and support leaders for adult Bible studies and small groups.
Outreach and Evangelism
  • Develop and implement outreach programs, including topical outreach initiatives.
  • Develop outreach strategies to members of our community with a focus on the families who our Wednesday night youth program already serves.
  • Lead and equip the church in evangelism by training members to participate in sharing the gospel.
  • Mobilize and coordinate community service initiatives.
Missions
  • Work with the Mission Ministry team to organize and lead short-term mission trips.
Pastoral Care
  • Lead the way in pastoral care through home, hospital, and nursing home visits.
  • Coordinate care teams and develop programs that involve church members in caring for one another.
  • Be available to conduct funerals and weddings when requested (with discretion of conscience).
  • Provide counseling within the scope of training and ability.
