School Nurse
Overview:
The School Nurse promotes the health and safety of students and staff by providing health services, developing health plans, and serving as a resource for wellness education. The nurse supports academic success by identifying and addressing health‑related barriers to learning. This is a part‑time role with flexible days/hours.
Key Responsibilities:Health Services
- Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, illness assessment, and emergency response
- Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and school policy
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations
- Monitor and manage students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy)
- Provide health education to students, families, and staff on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention
- Collaborate with school staff to promote a healthy school environment
- Participate in health‑related school events, parent workshops, and wellness initiatives
- Attend mandatory training as required by the LEA
- Develop and maintain emergency care plans for students with specific medical needs
- Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate with EMS when needed
- Maintain medical supplies and ensure readiness for emergencies
- Serve as liaison between school, families, and healthcare providers
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (IEPs, 504 plans) to address health‑related accommodations
- Comply with federal, state, and district health policies, including communicable disease reporting
- Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Tennessee
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- School setting with frequent interaction with students, staff, and families
- Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids (with proper protective equipment)
- May require standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 lbs
