About The DNR Forestry Division

The Division of Forestry promotes and practices good stewardship of natural, recreational, and cultural resources on Indiana's public and private forest lands. This stewardship produces continuing benefits for present and future generations. Key initiatives include:

  • Urban Forestry: promotes the plant health and ordinances of trees in urban areas
  • Fire Management: seeks to combat and eliminate wildland fires
  • Forest Health: monitors forest health and protects them from harmful insects and diseases
  • Forest Legacy: provides long-term protection to important forest lands

    prepares citizens to make responsible decisions about natural resource management
Role Overview

This position serves as the Seasonal Urban Forester.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work alongside communities to help them achieve their urban forestry goals
  • Assist with inspecting tree planting projects related to our grants program
  • Collaborate with other staff on planning, organizing, and executing Tree Steward and other training programs
  • Assist with GIS-related projects
  • Coordinate the Indiana Big Tree Register by locating, identifying, and measuring nominated trees
  • Contribute to the development of educational and outreach materials

This department is currently hiring for an Urban Forestry Intern. The hourly wage for seasonal positions varies, starting at $12.25/hour.

What You'll Need For Success

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High school diploma, GED, or one (1) year of work experience
  • May be expected to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • May be required to wear a DNR-provided uniform
  • May be required to travel to different properties
  • May be required to have a valid driver’s license
  • May experience working with DOC work release crews
  • May perform duties in varied environments including office, field, rugged terrain, and various adverse weather conditions
  • May work around potentially dangerous heavy equipment
  • Some positions may require:
  • Completion of some college coursework in wildlife management, natural resources, biology, ecology, forestry, or related areas
  • Ability to understand and apply on-the-job training and basic biological principles, ecological variables, plant identification, herbicide application, invasive plant management techniques, and life histories of invasive plants
  • Ability to lift equipment, tools, or materials up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical activity
  • Ability to carry out assignments with general instruction and limited supervision
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation
Benefits

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven-month period.
