Position: Scientist I, Radiochemistry
Location: Indianapolis

Summary

The Scientist I, Radiochemistry – Isotope Production will be responsible for taking a lead technical role in both R&D radio chemical and analytical methods supporting various isotope programs  role will support the development, optimization, and scale‑up of radio chemical processes to produce Actinium-225 through cyclotron irradiation of Radium-226 targets. Responsibilities include radio chemical separations, process engineering, automation, and manufacturing readiness associated with alpha‑emitting isotopes.

The individual will translate laboratory‑scale concepts into robust, scalable production processes suitable for implementation in shielded hot cells and GMP manufacturing facilities.

Job Responsibilities
  • Design, execute, and optimize radio chemical processes associated with the production, purification, and recovery of Actinium-225 and related isotopes.
  • Develop and implement separation and purification methods using chromatography, precipitation, solvent extraction, and other radio chemical techniques.
  • Support process scale‑up from benchtop experiments to shielded hot cell operations.
  • Perform hands‑on work with radioactive materials, including alpha‑emitting isotopes, while maintaining strict adherence to radiological safety practices.
  • Develop process flow diagrams, equipment specifications, operating procedures, and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on process equipment design, automation systems, shielding requirements, and facility integration.
  • Participate in target processing development, radionuclide recovery strategies, waste minimization efforts, and process troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and scientific literature to improve isotope production efficiency, reliability, and throughput.
  • Generate and analyze experimental data using statistical and scientific methods to guide process decisions.
  • Support technology transfer activities into manufacturing environments.
  • Use AI tools to enhance individual productivity and quality of work.
  • Contribute to regulatory documentation, safety reviews, and manufacturing readiness assessments as needed.
  • Mentor junior scientists and technicians while promoting a culture of scientific rigor and operational excellence.
  • Less than 5% of travel is required.
Education and Experience
  • BS/MS with 5+ years of experience, and/or 3+ years of hands‑on experience in Radiochemistry or other scientific equivalent working with open‑source radioactive materials.
  • PhD with 1+ years of experience in Radiochemistry or other scientific equivalent work experience.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Direct experience with Actinium-225, Radium-226, Thorium-229, Thorium-228, Radium-224, or other alpha‑emitting isotope systems.
  • Experience with hot cells, glove boxes, shielded enclosures, and remote handling systems.
  • Familiarity with cyclotron‑produced radioisotopes and post‑irradiation target processing.
  • Experience with ion exchange chromatography, extraction chromatography, solvent extraction, and radionuclide recovery methods.
  • Experience with process automation, fluid handling systems, or automated separation equipment.
  • Proficiency with analytical instrumentation such as HPGe spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, ICP‑OES, ICP‑MS, liquid scintillation counting, or related techniques.
  • Familiarity operating in a GxP setting.
  • Excellent scientific data analysis and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent professional ethics, integrity, and ability to maintain confidential information.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. This position requires working in a laboratory environment, protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses are required while working with radioactive materials.
