Aboutthe Role
Synthetic Molecule Design and Development has an exciting opportunity for an analytical chemist to join our development group. You will be part of a diverse team of analytical chemists, organic chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, and engineers delivering product and process understanding across a broad range of platforms (e.g. small molecule, peptides, and oligonucleotides). Top candidates for this position will be able to:
- Engage with scientists across Eli Lilly’s Development and Manufacturing organizations to develop and implement robust trace analytical methods and control strategies using mass spectrometry.
- Evaluate and/or deploy new analytical technologies/methods to advance Lilly's current analytical capabilities.
The ideal candidate will possess a breadth of analytical experience, a proven track record of success in conducting laboratory experiments, and a solid foundation in analytical data analysis. Candidates should excel in technical problem‑solving, demonstrate learning agility, and collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams.
Position Responsibilities- Independently conduct characterization and quantitation of trace levels of impurities, degradation products, related substances, genotoxic impurities, and nitrosamines in active pharmaceutical ingredients, dosage forms, and other materials using various mass spectrometry techniques.
- Develop robust trace analytical methods and collaborate with other functions or external partners to enable the successful transfer and implementation of those methods.
- Conduct troubleshooting, calibrations, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation in the Mass Spectrometry laboratory.
- Perform laboratory activities with a strong emphasis on safety and technical rigor, while adhering to local policies and procedures.
- Identify and exploit new scientific concepts, exhibit strong problem‑solving skills, and be self‑motivated to contribute across multiple projects.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to represent both the technical aspects and business‑related implications of your work.
- Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field
- 2+ years of relevant pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience, primarily with hands‑on lab experience
- Hands‑on experience with chromatographic separations
- Hands‑on experience with quantitative mass spectrometry instrumentation and methods
- Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F‑1 CPT, F‑1 OPT, F‑1 STEM OPT, J‑1, H‑1B, TN, O‑1, E‑3, H‑1B1, or L‑1
- Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field preferred (with 2+ years of industry experience)
- Capable of designing experiments, generating and retrieving data, and interpreting results independently
- Understanding of analytical method validation and the associated performance characteristics (e.g., linearity, precision, LOD/LOQ).
- Familiarity with chemical process development, synthetic organic chemistry, and rationales for establishing material specifications.
- Experience troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instrumentation.
- Demonstration of scientific leadership and the ability to influence others.
- Ability to balance multiple responsibilities, prioritize activities, and navigate ambiguity.
- Occasional travel, 0-10%
- Candidates must be comfortable working in a lab environment with potential exposure to chemicals and allergens
