Location: North Madison

The Mid-Level Wetland Biologist will be hired on a short-term, part-time basis (approximately 2–4 weeks) to support a single, project-specific field effort in southern Indiana. This position is strictly field-based and will focus exclusively on conducting independent wetland delineations, with no reporting, GIS, or office work required. The biologist must be able to work autonomously with minimal oversight and demonstrate strong proficiency in identifying and applying hydrologic, vegetative, and hydric soil indicators in accordance with Midwest regional methodology and Indiana state wetland delineation standards.

Successful candidates will have prior experience performing wetland delineations in the Midwest and be comfortable navigating variable field conditions while accurately documenting wetland boundaries and characteristics. This position has the potential for future work based on current and future project needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct wetland delineations and stream assessments in accordance with US Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation manual and associated regional supplement; using hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils, and wetland hydrology; identify and map jurisdictional wetland boundaries as subject to federal, state, and local regulations
  • Identify and evaluate wetland indicators, including hydrology, vegetation, and hydric soils, using accepted field protocols
  • Accurately determine and flag wetland boundaries and data points under variable site and weather conditions
  • Collect and record clear, defensible field data to support delineation decisions (e.g., field notes, photos, soil descriptions), as directed
  • Navigate to and across project sites, often in remote or undeveloped areas, while following safety expectations
  • Communicate field progress, observations, and any site constraints to the project manager as needed
  • Maintain consistency and professionalism while working autonomously with minimal technical input or supervision
  • Other potential duties
    • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
    • Travel to project areas across the Midwest and/or Eastern US, occasionally for weeks at a time.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. (or M.S.) degree in Botany, Environmental Sciences or similar field from accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a wetland biologist conducting wetland delineations in the Midwestern United States
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving clearance
  • Access to reliable vehicle and able to drive to remote site locations
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, field based team
Additional

Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Proficiency with GIS and GPS/GNSS (e.g., ArcGISpro/ESRI Field Maps)
  • Certification as a Wetland Professional In Training (WPIT)
  • Proficiency with field based data collection apps for filling USACE Data Forms (Bio App, Ecobot, etc.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Needs to be able to maintain a good attitude/focus while working in bad weather under difficult conditions.

Will do work that requires a committed effort and high level of motivation and focus.

Able to tolerate working in inclement weather conditions such as precipitation, high winds, prolonged exposure to insects, intense sunlight, and hot, cold, and high humidity is common.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.

The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The ability to walk long distances in rough terrain, dense vegetation, and wet and muddy conditions.
