Organizational Overview
Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is a critical function within Lilly Product Research & Development responsible for the development of synthetic drug substances and drug products from the pre‑clinical phase through commercialization.
JobPosition Overview
In the synthesis of pharmaceutical candidate compounds, this role develops chemical processes that minimize production cost while maximizing manufacturing capacity. The position requires advanced synthetic organic chemistry skills and strong problem‑solving capability, along with the ability to collaborate with multi‑functional teams and effectively communicate scientific data.
Responsibilities- Contribute to a healthy, supportive work culture and maintain a highly organized laboratory area with a strong focus on all aspects of chemical and occupational safety.
- Plan and execute laboratory experiments, analyze outcomes, optimize conditions, and document and communicate experimental findings.
- Prepare materials (milligrams to grams) for use by program or project teams and interface with chemists, analysts, and engineers for successful scale‑up of the chemical process.
- Use analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, and TLC; perform purifications using flash chromatography and crystallization.
- Operate and interpret spectroscopy data from NMR and mass spectrometry.
- BS/MS degree in chemistry (organic preferred) or closely related discipline.
- Authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis (no visa sponsorship provided).
- Good interpersonal and collaborative skills with excellent communication and customer‑orientation.
- Demonstrated self‑initiative and appropriate risk‑taking.
- Ability to prioritize multiple activities and manage ambiguity.
- Active scientific curiosity and interest in complementary disciplines within the pharmaceutical industry.
- Attention to detail and ability to diagnose problems.
- Proficiency in Chem Draw, Excel, and other data‑management software.
- Experience with analytical techniques such as NMR and LC‑MS.
This is a lab‑based role with potential exposure to chemicals, allergens, and loud noises. Travel is 0–10%. Position is located in Indianapolis, IN at Lilly Technology Center‑North (LTC‑N).
Compensation and BenefitsActual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated salary range is $65,250 – $169,400. Full‑time employees are eligible for company bonuses (performance based) and a comprehensive benefits program, including 401(k), pension, vacation, medical, dental, vision, prescription drug, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, leave of absence benefits, and wellness benefits.
