Group Leader, Environmental Risk Assessor

Purpose

The Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) group provides enterprise leadership for environmental risk assessments supporting global regulatory submissions and environmental stewardship commitments for pharmaceuticals in the environment (PiE).

• Lead the ERA Group; accountable for strategy, quality, and timely delivery of environmental studies and risk assessments characterizing the interaction of Lilly therapeutics with the environment.
• Serve as people leader, scientific leader, strategic consultant, and technical expert for PiE issues across portfolio, manufacturing network, regulatory functions, and external forums.

• Set scientific direction, develop environmental scientists, and build ERA capability across the portfolio.
• Own portfolio ERA testing, prioritization, study governance, and submission-ready delivery for global regulatory registrations.
• Direct fit-for-purpose CRO execution ensuring GLP compliance, data quality, and reliable report delivery.
• Advance portfolio/ERA science via innovative solutions and cross-functional collaboration.
• Communicate ERA strategy, risks, decisions, and regulatory implications.
• Advise manufacturing on pharmaceutical discharge limits and implementation strategies.
• Lead PiE governance with cross-functional partnership (GHSE, Governmental Affairs, R&D) and drive mitigation.
• Represent Lilly externally to benchmark guidelines and influence regulatory expectations.

• PhD in environmental or natural sciences (or related).
• 15 years’ experience in chemical environmental risk assessment in pharma/pesticide industry and/or as consultant.
• Research experience in environmental toxicology and/or environmental fate.
• Experience with OECD environmental studies and GLPs.
• Scientific communication via published papers and presentations.

• Cross-functional and external influencing; strong analytical/critical thinking; ability to organize/lead to consensus.
• Strong understanding of the scientific method.
• Broad knowledge of global environmental policies/issues and business implications.
• Familiarity with pharma/pesticide risk assessment processes; previous pharma/industry experience.

• Anticipated wage: $148,500–$257,400; potential company bonus.
