The City of Lawrence Utilities is seeking two Sewer Collections Laborers. The Sewer Collections Department within the Lawrence Utilities Department is responsible for the service and maintenance of 214 miles of sewer main, 4635 manholes, 25 lift stations and 82 grinder pumps. Responsible for performing daily operational tasks and required to be in an on‑call rotation. The position requires reporting to work after hours during emergencies related to utility infrastructure failures, snow removal tasks or other emergencies as declared by the Department Manager/Foreman, Utility Superintendent and/or Director of Operations.
Experience in the sewer maintenance or electrical field is preferred but not required.
Pay starts at $20.00 per hour with an additional $2.00 per hour Tech Pay for on‑call.
Essential Job Functions- Perform daily inspections of lift stations and grinder pumps
- Troubleshoot and repair pump and electrical issues
- Remove, repair and replace pumps using truck mounted crane
- Conduct high pressure jet‑rod cleaning of sewer mains and respond to sanitary sewer backup reports
- Inspect, maintain and repair manholes, valves and generators
- Perform CCTV inspections of sewer mains
- Perform concrete work as needed
- Perform general building, grounds, vehicle and equipment maintenance
- Install, repair and replace sewer piping and operate heavy equipment as required
- Perform all assigned work in a thorough and competent manner within a reasonable timeframe
- Ensure personal safety, equipment and tools are in good working condition and operated safely
- Drive and operate a motor vehicle to and from various job sites
- Perform work in trenches and confined spaces
- Be trained in Permit Required Confined Space Entry
- Assume occasional customer service‑related tasks to assist customers and citizens of the City of Lawrence; polite and courteous behavior is always expected
- Cross‑train and assist Utilities Department and other departments as necessary

- Materials – Must have a basic understanding of hand tools and develop knowledge of the specialized tools, equipment, fittings, material and chemicals relative to the job; must be able to use, handle and store the above‑mentioned items properly and safely
- Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort
- Some combinations of climbing and balancing include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling
- Some lifting includes overhead lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing up to 90lbs
