Field Service Technician – Network – Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. Perform work associated with splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities and equipment, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. Provide extraordinary customer service, identify customer needs, and promote TDS services and products to customers.
Location requirement: The candidate must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Whitestown, Indiana warehouse (1 N Main Street, Whitestown, IN 46075).
Sign‑on bonus: Eligible for a $2,500 sign‑on bonus (payout terms apply).
Responsibilities- Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products & services.
- Configure, maintain, and repair Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems such as fiber terminals, ISPs, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and/or DS3s.
- Identify and repair defective cable using test equipment; locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
- Operate pole climbing equipment and construction equipment; prevent damage to underground and buried facilities.
- Keep orderly log of all locate requests and perform cable fault acceptance tests on new facilities.
- Provide troubleshooting support techniques and respond to “trouble” dispatches.
- Maintain high‑level support for record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements).
- Provide excellent customer service and proactively sell TDS products and services.
- Manage projects related to system installation as requested by supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 6+ months experience with basic fiber‑optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair or switch training.
- Valid driver's license.
- Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
Other Qualifications
- Complete customer‑specific requirements, including background checks.
- Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel and overtime required.
- Successfully pass all Safety Course components; maintain DOT requirements for vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
- Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of telecommunication products and services (inside wiring, internet, bonding, structured wiring, video, inventory, battery maintenance, etc.).
- Proficient with computer applications: databases, repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Office.
- Work independently with little supervision; strong customer service and sales skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.
- Operate manual‑transmission vehicles.
Regularly sit, stand, write, and operate a computer keyboard and telephone. Frequently move, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, or climb. May lift up to 50 lbs (occasionally up to 100 lbs). Required close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision. May work outdoors, in mechanical equipment rooms, or extreme weather. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
