Job Summary
:
Fleet Services by Cox Automotive is hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic II for an on‑site shop position. The Technician will perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, and light repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑weight trailers.
- Always comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Determine parts required, coordinate with Shop Parts Department, and keep the shop clean and safe.
- Assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
- Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and satisfy expectations.
- Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work related activities and time allocations.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs.
- Carry out routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks for repairs.
- Document work in Repair Orders (RO) using company devices and app, upload photos, and fill DOT forms accurately.
- Maintain high productivity and meet standard repair times.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team for approvals, purchase order numbers, and repair estimate discussions.
- Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies; OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
- Participate in and complete all company safety training.
- Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks and perform daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer components: aluminum, chem‑lite, brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps & engines, liftgates, brake chambers, steering systems, weld/fabrication, panels, body and framework.
- Diagnose and repair trailer equipment using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Assist Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.
- High School Diploma or GED with 3 years of related experience, or a higher degree or certification combined with 5 years of experience.
- Must possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary for the role.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Must pass DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical (or a valid DOT medical card with >4 months validity).
- Must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid state driver’s license, and be able to maintain a Driver Qualification File.
- Valid driver’s license required for safe driving duties.
- ASE T8 (PMI) – required within 18 months.

- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems; ability to repair and maintain them.
- Strong judgment of distance and object relationships.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Effective two‑way communication with individuals and groups.
- Ability to lift, bend, climb, and stand for long periods; performance of moderately heavy labor.
- Reasoning and problem‑solving skills; assess strengths and weaknesses of solutions.
- Physical endurance for repetitive work and long periods.
- Hourly base pay: $24.23 – $36.35 per hour, depending on location and qualifications.
- New Hire Bonus: $5,000 (50% after 30 days, 50% after 180 days).
