The Lead Carpenter is a full-time, on-site role based in Indianapolis, IN. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing carpentry work on commercial projects, while leading and mentoring field carpenters and laborers. Day-to-day tasks include reading and interpreting blueprints, laying out work, building and installing structural framing, and performing precise finish carpentry. The Lead Carpenter will select and use appropriate materials, hand tools, and power tools, ensure work meets quality and safety standards, and coordinate with project managers, site supervisors, and other trades.
This role also includes monitoring project progress, troubleshooting issues on site, maintaining a clean and organized work area, and helping ensure projects are completed on schedule.
- Strong carpentry skills, including layout, installation, and repair of structural and finish components.
- Proficiency with hand tools and power tools, including safe operation, maintenance, and proper selection for each task.
- Experience with framing, including walls, floors, roofs, and related structural systems.
- Skilled in finish carpentry such as trim, casework, doors, windows, and detailed interior woodwork.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
- Proven experience leading field crews, assigning tasks, and mentoring less‑experienced team members.
- Strong commitment to jobsite safety, OSHA awareness, and adherence to company safety policies.
- Solid math skills, attention to detail, and ability to measure, cut, and install materials accurately.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with project managers, clients, and other trades.
- Previous experience as a lead or senior carpenter in residential or commercial construction; relevant certifications or vocational training are a plus.
