Position Summary:
The Maintenance III Mechanical Specialist is responsible for performing skilled journeyman-level work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, electrical infrastructure, and commercial food service equipment across all school corporation facilities. This position ensures a safe, comfortable, and fully operational environment for students, staff, and food service operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:HVAC & Climate Control
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on district HVAC systems, including RTUs, chillers, boilers, heat pumps, air handlers, and VAV boxes.
- Inspect, clean, and replace filters, belts, motors, and coils; replace bad compressors, fans, and electrical components.
- Maintain refrigerant logs, perform leak checks, and ensure compliance with EPA regulations regarding recovery and disposal.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical systems up to standard facility voltages (120/208/480V), including panels, breakers, transformers, and disconnects.
- Install, repair, and replace interior and exterior lighting fixtures, ballast/LED drivers, switches, outlets, and controls.
- Inspect electrical lines, conduits, and junction boxes to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Assist with the routine inspection and emergency operation of backup power generators and emergency lighting systems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, steamers, dishwashers, warmers, walk-in coolers, and freezers.
- Calibrate thermostats, sensors, and safety shut-off controls on gas, electric, and steam kitchen appliances.
- Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration systems, replacing door gaskets, coils, drain lines, and temperature monitoring units.
- Safely operate and maintain a variety of specialized electrical, HVAC, and diagnostic tools (multimeters, manifolds, recovery units).
- Conduct routine maintenance on assigned company vehicle, tools, and test equipment.
- Maintain an inventory of critical parts, spare motors, controls, and supplies.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and adhere to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.
- Perform seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow plowing, snow blowing, shoveling, and salting/sanding parking lots, sidewalks, and building entrances to ensure safe campus access.
Qualifications:
- Proven ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex HVAC, electrical, and commercial kitchen equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical theory, low/line voltage systems, and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Familiarity with commercial refrigeration cycle diagnostics and gas appliance plumbing/valves.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, mechanical blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Knowledge of local building codes, OSHA standards, and strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate repairs around school and cafeteria schedules.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3-5 years of practical experience in commercial HVAC, electrical maintenance, or commercial kitchen equipment repair and maintenance.
- EPA Universal Certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Experience working in a school environment is preferred.
- OSHA, First Aid, and CPR certifications are preferred.
- Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, or kneeling.
- Use of ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to perform work.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 100 pounds or more.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and varying weather and temperature conditions.
- Must possess close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
