FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Full-Time
The High Voltage Apparatus Specialist performs inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, reconditioning, and commissioning activities on low, medium, and high-voltage electrical apparatus. This position is primarily shop-based but requires occasional travel to customer sites and substations. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with circuit breakers, switch gear, transformers, regulators, and reclosers, along with strong electrical testing and diagnostic skills.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, retrofit, and test:
- 480V-72kV air, vacuum, and SF6 circuit breakers
- 138kV-550kV SF6 circuit breakers and circuit switchers
- Reclosers, sectionalizers, regulators, and transformers
- Operate electrical testing equipment, including:
- Primary/secondary injection test sets
- Insulation analyzers
- Contact resistance meters
- Breaker time/travel analyzers
- Power factor test sets
- CT analyzers
- Complete PEARL documentation and PowerDB test reports accurately and on time.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Follow OSHA, NFPA 70E, PEARL, NETA, and company safety requirements.
- Support project planning, scheduling, execution, and cost control activities.
- Maintain tools, testing equipment, and company vehicles.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in electrical testing, maintenance, construction, commissioning, or related power industry work.
- Experience working with low, medium, and high-voltage apparatus.
- Strong troubleshooting skills in mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-based reporting.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to pass background, motor vehicle, drug, and alcohol screenings.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology.
- Military electrical experience.
- Experience with SF6 apparatus.
- PowerDB experience.
- CDL or willingness to obtain required driving endorsement.
Must be able to obtain:
- NETA Level II within 12 months
- PEARL Level I within 12 months
- PEARL Level II within 24 months
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification
- NFPA 70E Training
- CPR Certification
- Primarily shop-based with occasional field assignments.
- Work near energized substations following established safety procedures.
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Overtime, weekends, nights, and holiday work may be required based on project demands.
A successful candidate will have hands-on experience servicing high-voltage power equipment, strong diagnostic and testing capabilities, knowledge of NETA/PEARL standards, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, documentation quality, and customer service.
