Sr. Shop Diesel Technician

Company:
Cox Automotive. This role is located at a specified Cox location and requires no remote work.

Hourly base pay: $32.26 – $48.41 per hour. Eligible for additional compensation such as commission and incentive programs. New Hire Bonus: $3,000 paid in two installments (50% after 30 days, 50% after 180 days).

Job Summary

Provide licensed DOT inspections, preventive maintenance, light and advanced repairs, advanced mechanical/hydraulic/electrical diagnostics, and other related duties on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment. Support junior technicians, maintain shop safety and documentation standards, and occasionally travel to customer locations.

Responsibilities
  • Follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in daily cleanup.
  • Assess customer needs in conjunction with Service Writers, provide assistance, and resolve issues.
  • Prioritize concurrent tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, confidentiality, and ethical professionalism.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and post‑inspection repairs on all duty vehicles.
  • Occasionally travel and perform work at customer locations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance: oil changes, battery checks, lubrication, etc.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work on Repair Orders (RO) using company devices and upload photos of completed work.
  • Accurately complete DOT and other required forms in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to safety, health, environmental policies, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Complete required safety training and maintain daily pre/post‑trip inspections on shop‑assigned service trucks.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment, including electrical, brake, cooling, starters, alternators, fans, clutches, transmissions, engines, and steel components.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment; generate and evaluate alternatives using sound judgment.
  • Assist junior technicians with diagnostics, parts selection, and technical issues.
  • Provide advanced diagnostics and triage complicated repairs for junior technicians.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field; alternative combinations of education and experience (e.g., 3 years’ experience with a higher degree) are acceptable.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a set of hand tools required for job duties.
  • Obtain an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) T8 (PMI) certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for extended periods; perform moderately heavy labor; and handle repetitive tasks.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

  • Required:

    ASE T8 (PMI) certification (within 18 months of hire) and ASE 608/609 certification.
  • Preferred: ASE T2 (Diesel Engines), ASE T3 (Drivetrain), ASE T4 (Brakes), ASE T5 (Suspension), ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems), ASE T7 (HVAC), ASE A8 (Engine Performance), ASE L1 (Advanced Engine Performance Specialist), ASE L2 (Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist).
