Indy Hunger Network (IHN) is a collaborative organization made up of nonprofit and corporate partners working on hunger relief in the Greater Indianapolis area. Our mission is to address systemic issues and eliminate disparities in the Greater Indianapolis hunger relief system through collaboration on programs, advocacy, and research.
Position SummaryThe Food Resource Navigator works within Indy Hunger Network’s Food Resource Services Hub (FRSH) program to improve food security for Marion County residents by helping people access multiple food assistance programs and related resources in one place. The Navigator provides direct, one-on-one support to residents, including screenings, referrals, application assistance, emergency food support, and follow-up. Because this position provides direct resident support and community-based services, the Navigator is expected to maintain reliable scheduling, accurate timekeeping, timely documentation, and consistent communication with their supervisor and IHN staff.
Bilingual English/Spanish competency is preferred to better support residents and community partners.
- Provide one-on-one assistance, screenings, and referrals to people experiencing food insecurity.
- Connect visitors to available food resources, including SNAP, WIC, TANF, school meals, senior meals, home delivery services, food pantries, meal sites, and nutrition incentive programs in a confidential, respectful, and appropriate manner.
- Assist visitors in completing applications, submitting documents, participating in interviews, and completing other required activities associated with receiving food assistance.
- Provide appropriate follow-up with residents when additional support, documentation, or resource navigation is needed.
- Distribute emergency food assistance to visitors and coordinate the sourcing, storage, organization, and tracking of food items to distribute.
- Track FRSH activities, referrals, services provided, and outcomes in the appropriate spreadsheets, databases or reporting tools in a timely and accurate manner.
- Support FRSH-in-Pantry, outreach, tabling, partner referrals, and other community-based activities as assigned.
- Coordinate with food pantries, community partners, and IHN staff to support residents and strengthen connections to available resources.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle resident information in a respectful, secure, and appropriate manner.
- Participate in staff meetings, supervision check-ins, trainings, and program planning as requested.
- Work the assigned weekly schedule and expected number of hours (20-25 hours per week) unless leave, schedule changes, or other adjustments have been approved in advance by the supervisor.
- Follow IHN timekeeping and payroll procedures by clocking in and out accurately, keeping the timecard up to date, and submitting any needed corrections promptly.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date work calendar that reflects scheduled work hours, meetings, resident appointments, site visits, outreach activities, work location, planned time away, and schedule changes.
- Communicate proactively with the supervisor about schedule changes, inability to work scheduled hours, resident appointments, program needs, barriers, and competing priorities.
- Attend scheduled meetings, appointments, trainings, and partner activities on time and prepared.
- Manage assigned tasks, documentation, and follow-up responsibilities within expected timelines.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- 2+ years of experience interacting with customers, clients, or the general public.
