Job Title

School Bus Dispatcher

Classification & Hours

Non-Exempt, hourly employee

Work days: 261 days (including paid holidays & vacation time).

Standard hours per day: 8 hours per day, not including a 60‑minute unpaid, duty‑free meal.

Work year:
Begins on the first weekday in July and ends 12 months later on the last weekday of June.

Pay & Benefits

Paid on the Bus Driver salary schedule and eligible for benefits on the Support Staff schedule. Starting pay is $23.86.

Reporting To

Director of Transportation.

Overview

Under general supervision, the Bus Dispatcher performs district‑based duties that are crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and other educational activities.

Essential Functions Bus Route Coordination
  • Optimize bus routes for efficiency, safety, and compliance with local traffic laws and regulations.
  • Adjust routes as needed to accommodate changes in student enrollment, address modifications, or traffic conditions.
Driver Schedule and Communication
  • Communicate changes to schedules, routes, or other relevant information to drivers and parents/caregivers promptly.
Parent and School Communication
  • Deliver a high level of customer service to all who visit or call MSD Warren Township District offices.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents/caregivers and school staff regarding transportation‑related inquiries, concerns, or changes.
  • Receive transportation‑related issues that may arise, including delays, accidents, students not arriving home after school, or complaints.
Safety and Compliance
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to safety protocols and procedures for student loading, unloading, and transportation.
Emergency Response
  • Support the implementation of emergency response protocols in collaboration with school administrators and transportation leadership, and when needed, with the Warren Township Police Department.
  • Coordinate transportation during emergencies or adverse weather conditions to ensure student safety, including construction, railroad crossings, or debris blocking roadways.
Record Keeping
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of bus routes, schedules, seating charts, evacuation plans, and driver assignments.
  • Initiate bus parking maps for all schools based on the length of bus routes and update throughout the year.
  • Assist with the safety shoe program and reimbursements.
  • Distribute information on bus evacuations each semester along with lap shoulder‑belt reporting forms.
  • Maintain and update bus driver/monitor information and staff mailboxes throughout the year.
Training and Professional Development
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new personnel, mainly Bus Drivers and Bus Monitors.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with district technology initiatives, industry trends, transportation regulations, and best practices through ongoing professional development and learning.
  • Assist in scheduling CPR, CPI (NCI), Back to School, Safe Schools, and other ongoing training and meetings throughout the year.

Other tasks necessary for the work of the department: perform related duties as directed.

Entry‑Level Requirements
  • Education/Training:
    High‑school diploma or equivalent; some college education or relevant certification is a plus.
  • Experience:

    Previous experience in transportation logistics, dispatching, or related fields preferred. Knowledge of Warren Township roadways is a plus.
  • Certifications & licenses:
    None required. CDL preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies effectively.
  • Proficiency with computer software (Google Suite, transportation apps, transportation management software).
  • Familiarity with local traffic laws and regulations related to school bus transportation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with school, staff, parents/caregivers, and drivers/monitors.
  • Ability to perform essential functions, meet performance aptitudes, and fulfill physical/sensory/environmental requirements of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations).
