Passenger Bus Driver

Job Description

Drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes on an as needed basis.

Interested parties must:

• Obtain a Department of Transportation Physical (cost reimbursed by Frontier School Corporation)
• Enroll in and successfully complete a 4‑day Pre‑Service Class through the Indiana Department of Education
• Obtain a Blue Card
• Successfully pass a Physical Fitness Test
• Complete four (4) hours of observation with a school bus driver holding a yellow card
• Complete eight (8) hours of driving with a school bus driver holding a yellow card
• Pass the written test for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV)
• Pass the Skills Test at a Department of Transportation testing site

Essential Functions:

• Pick up and discharge students in accordance with established timelines; observe legal and defensive driving practices in all weather and road conditions.
• Maintain order and discipline among passengers; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel and ensure students understand the bus rules.
• Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect interior, exterior, and engine to ensure safe operational condition; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as needed.
• Collaborate with departmental supervisor or administrator to establish and maintain student bus stops and transportation schedules.
• Maintain and update route sheets; contact parents or guardians to establish route pick‑up or delivery times as assigned; notify supervisor of changes in routes.
• Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition.
• Load and unload students as required; utilize and assist students with wheelchair lifts as needed.
• Operate a two‑way radio to communicate with Superintendent Office personnel.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building or unit.

Qualifications:

Any combination equivalent to:

• Graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to perform assigned duties.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the state of Indiana.
• Meeting State Department of Transportation physical requirements.
• Abstention from narcotic drug use and excessive drinking.
• Having sufficient physical and mental abilities to operate a school bus safely.

Position Type: Part‑Time

Salary: $114.40 to $124.47 per day
