Position: Class A CDL Line Haul Mileage Driver - Night and Weekends (Home Daily)
Location: Indianapolis

Job Summary

Line Haul Drivers operate various tractor‑trailer combinations over long distances between customer service centers and customer facilities or work sites outside of the service center’s geographic area. Responsibilities include sorting, handling, loading, and unloading freight at company and customer locations. The position averages annual pay of $107,000 and offers a Tuition Reimbursement Program for recent trucking school graduates.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Operate the vehicle safely within DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspections, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass a drug and, if applicable, an alcohol test.
  • Perform pre‑trip inspections of the vehicle before beginning a trip.
  • Ensure that products loaded onto the trailer are stable and will not shift during transit and delivery; adjust load securement and distribution as needed.
  • Use tablets or phones to record delivery information and begin navigation.
  • Unsecure freight for delivery and unload freight at the drop‑off location with a hand truck.
  • Be available for around‑the‑clock shifts to accommodate freight movements and be able to be away from home for extended periods.

Job Qualifications
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must have at least 12 months of previous tractor‑trailer driving experience and/or be a graduate of a state‑certified and licensed truck driving school, or have satisfactorily completed the Old Dominion truck driver training program (ODTDT 8/88).
  • Must have simple mathematical calculation abilities for handling receipts, reading maps, road signs, and maintaining logs.
  • Must be able to properly operate a handheld mini‑computer when required.
  • Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspections, maintenance, and extended periods of time.
  • Must possess a valid ClassA Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
  • Must have working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.
  • Must be available for around‑the‑clock trips to accommodate freight movements and be able to be away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a drug test.
  • Must satisfactorily pass an alcohol test (if applicable).
  • Must satisfactorily complete the orientation/training program instructed by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer.
Physical Demands
  • Sitting: Sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours.
  • Standing/Walking: Stand and walk on various surfaces such as concrete, pavement, wood and metal, and sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces.
  • Bending/Stooping/Kneeling: Perform occasional squatting to handle, position, and secure freight; perform occasional crouching and kneeling to handle freight and conduct pre‑trip inspections.
  • Climbing: Enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 8 to 10 times a day; climb steps and handholds as necessary.
  • Moving Materials: Frequently push freight weighing up to 500pounds on a dolly or cart; occasionally push freight weighing more than 300pounds with or without a mechanical aid; frequently pull freight weighing up to 500pounds; carry freight weighing 1 to 100pounds over distances up to 100feet; load and unload full trailers of freight weighing as much as 50,000pounds.
  • Reaching: Reach for freight at waist level, occasionally above shoulder height or below waist level.
  • Other: Install and remove tire chains when required; use both hands to get in and out of the truck; wrap and unwrapping shrink wrap; secure and unsecure pallets; use pallet jack or hand truck; operate steering wheel, buttons on lift gates; shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals; use cognitive skills for safety logic and reasoning; read manifests, tablets, navigation, road signs, and order numbers;
