Train Operator

Salary Range $32.46 - $38.19 Position Type Full Time Category Transportation

This position is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, cost-effective and customer-satisfying train, yard and switching operations through effective management of yard and train functions.

The location of this position varies (Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Switz City, Jasonville, IN; Palestine, IL)

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform work in train operations, including without limitation, coupling and uncoupling cars, inspecting trains, throwing switches, locking and unlocking derails, coupling and uncoupling air hoses, relieving other Train Operators, training other Train Operators, receiving train orders and/or track warrants, receiving and delivering waybills and bills of lading, contacting customers, driving company vehicles and other duties as assigned
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the locomotive consist and the cars or train to which coupled
  • Operate all forms of motive power, including remote control, used as locomotives, coupled with or without cars, in all train service on all rail lines owned or operated by the Company
  • Perform switching: place cars to facilitate loading and unloading and the makeup and breakdown of trains in a rail yard, industrial plant, or similar location
  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Maintain accurate records of cars handled, repairs performed and track conditions encountered
  • Inspect locomotive, train and equipment condition as required by FRA and INRD rules
  • Provide and receive various forms of communication, both written and verbal, with management, dispatch, customer service, customers and connecting railroads; concerning railway cars movement and placement (switch lists, interchange reports, etc.)
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc.)
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School diploma/GED
    • 18 years of age or older
    • Valid Driver's License

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Certified Conductor and/or Locomotive Engineer
    • 3 or more years experience on a railroad
    • Experience working on-call basis and/or varying shift schedules

    Employment Conditions:

    • Work safely, follow standard procedures, be alert and take necessary precautions to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
    • Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses
    • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work, including on-call 7 days a week, 24 hours per day and short rest between assignments in accordance with the hours of service regulation
    • Work hours are based on seniority - new hires will work primarily nights, weekends, and holidays
    • Must be able to report to work safely with two-hour notice
    • Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examination
    • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
    • Must pass all required assessments
    • Must pass a background screening
    • Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test
    • Must obtain and maintain engineer and conductor certifications
    • Strict disciplinary policy regarding inability to report to work within proper time frame, or failure to accept a call for work
    • This positions is governed by a collective bargaining agreement; membership is required
    • Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for positions

    Physical Requirements:

    • Walk long distance over uneven terrain, work around moving equipment, climb, ascend and descend locomotives
    • Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds on a rare basis
    • Reach, bend, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, sit, stand, balance and lift in the course of duties
    • Talk/hear (communicate, detect, converse with, discern, convey, express oneself, exchange information)
    • See (detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, estimate, assess)
    • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
    • Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time
    • Must meet color vision requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations
    • Must meet hearing acuity requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations
