The consultant travels regularly to evaluate existing buildings, reviews architectural and life safety documentation, inspects building conditions, identifies code deficiencies, and produces clear, accurate deliverables that support compliance and corrective actions. Responsibilities
Travel to hospitals and healthcare facilities to conduct on-site life safety and fire protection code compliance reviews of existing buildings.
Review architectural drawings, construction documents, building design plans, and life safety plans to understand existing building features and code-required elements.
Inspect building conditions in the field and identify features and systems that do not comply with applicable life safety and fire protection codes.
Perform life safety and fire protection inspections, including life safety system inspection activities as needed for code compliance evaluations.
Photograph observed code deficiencies and clearly document each violation with written descriptions tied directly to the supporting images.
Compile findings into organized, professional documentation that clearly communicates code issues and recommended corrective actions.
Color-code and label life safety and fire protection drawings to accurately reflect required code elements and observed field conditions.
Collaborate with contractors and facility representatives on-site, clearly explaining findings, code requirements, and potential corrective measures.
Plan and organize travel and site visits efficiently, including trips that may span one to two weeks depending on project size and location.
Work closely with a teammate on-site to ensure thorough coverage of large buildings and maintain a high level of accuracy in inspections and documentation.
Apply a strong understanding of how buildings are constructed in order to interpret drawings, anticipate potential problem areas, and evaluate building features against code requirements.
Maintain detailed records of site visits, inspections, and communications to support ongoing compliance efforts and future project work.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in a construction-related field such as Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline.
Strong understanding of core construction principles and how a building is assembled, including structural, architectural, and systems components.
Demonstrated interest in fire protection and life safety systems and a desire to develop expertise in this niche field.
Ability to read, interpret, and work with construction drawings, architectural plans, and life safety plans.
Capability to perform building inspections, including assessing construction details and identifying life safety and fire protection issues.
Strong verbal communication skills for direct interaction with contractors and client representatives while on-site.
Clear and concise written communication skills for documenting code deficiencies and preparing professional reports.
Willingness and ability to travel regularly, typically one week on the road followed by one week in the office, with occasional trips of up to two weeks.
Physical ability to move effectively throughout healthcare facilities, including prolonged walking and standing.
Physical ability to climb ladders, access above-ceiling spaces, enter tight or confined areas, and inspect building features in a variety of conditions.
Comfort working both independently and as part of a small team in the field and in the office.
