Architectural Field Surveyor

Employer:

Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA)

Location:

Central Indiana

Schedule:

Full time (40 hours/week), flexible hours available

Start Date:

Late April 2024 Training:
Several days of training in the Indianapolis office

Duties

Drive every road in the respective county to record and evaluate buildings, bridges, and cemeteries at least 40 years old, conduct research, writing, or editing

Requirements

Reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license, ability to navigate rural terrain and paved urban areas, experience with Microsoft Office 365 and digital photography

Physical Requirements

Operate a motor vehicle, walk, stand, climb stairs, traverse uneven ground, dirt roads, paved roads, and city sidewalks, carry equipment including tablet computers, chargers, style guide/other paper resources

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, material culture, or other relevant field, ability to learn, understand, and assess the nuances of vernacular types and architecture styles, effective communication skills, self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently, experience conducting research and summarizing data into condensed reports

Preferences

Candidates with a Master’s degree in historic preservation or architectural history

Personal Work Relationships

Works independently, maintains working relationships with fellow surveyors, supervisor, and other division staff, interacts with the public during the survey process

Responsibilities

Submit work to the survey coordinator multiple times per week, maintain data for mileage reimbursements and timesheets, behave in a respectful, responsible, and professional manner, handle the equipment responsibly

Note:

This is a temporary position through a contracting company, not directly with the State of Indiana Dept of Natural Resources. Employment in this position for two years meets the federal requirements for historic preservation professionals under 36 CFR 61.
