Legal Prep Charter Academy is a free, open-enrollment public charter school with a unique law-themed, college-preparatory model designed to prepare students from traditionally underserved communities for success in college, careers, and civic leadership. Founded in Chicago in 2012, Legal Prep integrates rigorous academics with real-world professional experiences, including law courses at every grade level and monthly skills-based programming with legal and business partners.

In Fall 2026, Legal Prep will open its first Indianapolis campus, launching with 6th and 9th grades and growing into a full 6-12 school. Our founding faculty will play a critical role in shaping the culture, systems, and academic excellence of the school from day one.

Position Overview

Legal Prep is seeking a founding 9th Grade Law Teacher to teach Street Law and introductory law coursework. This course provides students with foundational knowledge of the legal system while helping them develop skills in advocacy, public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking. This is a signature role within the Legal Prep model. The Law Teacher will introduce students to various types of legal careers (e.g., criminal, corporate, civil rights, public interest, intellectual property) while building transferable academic and professional skills.

Responsibilities

Instruction & Legal Programming

* Teach 9th Grade Street Law and introductory legal studies curriculum.

* Provide students with an overview of the legal system and different types of lawyers and legal careers.

* Facilitate mock trials, debates, case studies, and simulations.

* Develop students' written and oral advocacy skills.

* Partner with community legal professionals to support real-world learning experiences.

Skill Development

* Emphasize critical thinking, persuasive writing, structured argument, and public speaking.

* Support students in developing professionalism and confidence in formal settings.

Advisory & Culture

* Serve as an advisor to a cohort of students.

* Support restorative practices and school wide expectations.

* Participate in professional development and legal partnership coordination.

Qualifications

* Juris Doctor (J.D.) required.

* Experience in legal practice, public interest law, corporate law, prosecution/defense, or related field.

* Teaching experience preferred but not required (strong candidates without teaching backgrounds will be considered).

* Ability to translate complex legal concepts into accessible, engaging instruction for high school students.

* Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.

* Commitment to working with students from historically underserved communities.

* Indiana teaching license preferred but not required at time of application (school will support licensure pathway if necessary).

* Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
