Heritage Christian School Teacher - Educational Support Services

Position Objective:
The major responsibility of the position is to work closely with teachers and families in an effort to support the students enrolled in intervention programs in a manner consistent with our school mission statement and the mission statement of Educational Support Services (ESS). The ESS teacher should have a thorough understanding of specific learning differences, related areas and various intervention/remediation methods.

Qualifying Characteristics:
The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle. The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. The ideal teacher must have the desire to work closely with students, teachers, parents, staff, and school administrators.

The ability to exercise good judgment, set a good example, and comply with school standards is a must. Tactful communication in dealing with individuals at all levels, and the ability to work as a member of a team is critical.

Educational and Experience Requirements: A Bachelor's degree required, preferably in education; an advanced degree in special education (learning disabilities, mild interventions) or related field is preferred. NILD or Orton-Gillingham certification is a plus.

Major Responsibilities:

• Provide an appropriate educational experience for students who need academic support to successfully complete an HCS education.
• Responsible for working with students as they navigate through social, personal, academic, and most importantly spiritual growth in light of their learning abilities.
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of ability and achievement tests to assist with placement within the program.
• Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning that enhances student abilities and addresses identified areas of weakness.
• Maintain consistent communication with the classroom teachers for determination of accommodations and academic standards.
• Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and provide written explanations of evaluations for the parents.
• Provide consistent intervention utilizing HCS implemented methods and strategies.
• Identify and implement intervention techniques to address skills that have not been mastered due to specific learning differences or attention deficits
• Prepare to deliver classroom interventions as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Must be able to traverse campus and sports fields and facilities. Must be able to use a computer and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must be able to hear low-volume sounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons

Work Environment:
Generally classroom setting. Possible change in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, using computer/monitor screen. Some exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with student arrival/dismissal and recess duties. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.
