Controls Engineer - Packaging Manufacturing
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support industrial control systems that improve machine performance, reliability, and safety. The role focuses on developing PLC and HMI applications, troubleshooting electrical and control system issues, and collaborating with mechanical and electrical teams to deliver automated solutions that meet production objectives and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, and commission PLC logic for new and existing equipment to meet functional and safety requirements.
- Develop and maintain HMI screens, operator interfaces, and visualization tools for clear machine status and operator control.
- Create and update electrical and control system documentation, including schematics, PLC/HMI code libraries, I/O lists, and wiring diagrams.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to define control system requirements and optimize machine performance.
- Implement and verify safety circuits, interlocks, and adherence to applicable electrical and machine safety standards.
- Provide technical support and training to maintenance personnel and operators; diagnose and resolve production issues promptly.
- Participate in project planning, cost estimation, and continuous improvement activities to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
- Apply version control, structured coding standards, and thorough testing procedures to ensure reliable deployments.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent technical experience.
- Proven experience programming PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or similar) and developing HMI applications.
- Strong understanding of electrical schematics, wiring, industrial networks (Ether Net/IP, Profi Net, Modbus), and I/O systems.
- Hands-on experience with controls integration, motor drives, sensors, and instrumentation used in automated equipment.
- Familiarity with automation best practices, control system architecture, and machine safety standards (e.g., NFPA 79, ISO 13849)
- Excellent troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose electrical and control issues in a production environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills; experience working with cross-functional engineering and maintenance teams.
- Preferred: experience with SCADA systems, scripting for data logging, and version control tools (Git or equivalent).
