Position Summary

Our client is seeking an experienced Revenue / Tax Compliance Specialist to perform a wide range of compliance examinations, research, and customer-facing duties related to the preparation, payment, and collection of state-level taxes. This role requires strong analytical skills, independent judgment, and the ability to interpret and apply complex tax laws while maintaining a high standard of customer service and confidentiality.

The position plays a key role in improving taxpayer compliance, resolving complex tax issues, supporting audits and investigations, and ensuring accurate processing of returns, payments, and assessments.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance & Research

  • Examine, review, and assess tax returns, financial records, and related documentation for accuracy and compliance.

  • Independently research and analyze taxpayer information from multiple internal and external sources.

  • Interpret and apply applicable state and federal tax laws, rules, regulations, and legal guidance.

  • Identify non-filing, underpayment, or delinquency issues and take appropriate corrective action.

  • Determine eligibility for tax credits, deductions, refunds, and benefit programs.

Account Management & Processing

  • Review and maintain taxpayer accounts, including applying payments, transferring credits, creating or canceling liabilities, and resolving discrepancies.

  • Create billings and assessments, including calculating penalty and interest where applicable.

  • Process original and amended tax returns, payments, and related forms across multiple tax types.

  • Review and close cases that are paid in full, dismissed, or otherwise resolved.

Audits, Investigations & Special Reviews

  • Perform desk audits and assist with audit preparation, research, and documentation.

  • Support investigations and compliance initiatives, including fraud detection and identity theft prevention.

  • Assist with evidence collection and documentation to support legal or administrative proceedings.

  • Provide technical support related to bankruptcy matters, refund claims, protests, and appeals.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, tax practitioners, and internal stakeholders.

  • Communicate complex tax information clearly and professionally via phone, written correspondence, and electronic systems.

  • Handle sensitive and escalated cases with tact, professionalism, and sound judgment.

  • Complete disclosure requests for confidential taxpayer information in accordance with applicable laws.

Operational & Team Support

  • Assist supervisors or team leads with workload coordination, training, and process improvement.

  • Prepare documentation, reports, and statistical data related to case activity and productivity.

  • Participate in training initiatives and support updates to procedures or forms as needed.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in accounting, tax compliance, finance, auditing, collections, or customer service.

  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Strong understanding of accounting and auditing principles.

  • Experience working with complex casework requiring independent judgment and detailed analysis.

  • Proficiency with computerized tax or financial processing systems and standard office software.

Skills & Abilities

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage sensitive information and adhere to confidentiality and ethics requirements.

  • Ability to explain technical tax matters clearly to non-technical audiences.

  • Capable of working independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
