General Statement of Duties:

All clinical care provided by the Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) will be within the scope of the duties assigned by the supervising Ortho Indy Physicians, who is a Spine surgeon who provides care in our Northwest Indianapolis and Greenwood clinics and performs surgeries and procedures at our Northwest Indianapolis hospital as well as at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

The supervising Physician must either physically be present or immediately available for consultation when services are provided by the Advanced Practice Provider, including care provided using protocols, guidelines, and/or standing order. When the supervising Physicians are unavailable, they may designate another Physician who has agreed to temporarily be responsible for the supervision.

Essential Duties:

  • Helps plan and implement care of doctor's patients, including entering orders into the patient record that are verbal orders or part of standing orders or protocols approved by the supervising physician. Provides direct patient treatment, including but not limited to: assists with simple wound care and repair, joint injection and aspiration, administration of local anesthetic and digital blocks, joint and fracture reduction, and application of braces, splints, and other DME and soft goods.

    Responsibilities also include surgical first assist in the operating room.
  • Orders radiologic and laboratory tests and studies as necessary to complete history and physical examinations.
  • Assesses patients and assesses normal and abnormal findings obtained from history and physical examination as well as radiology and ancillary studies.
  • Plans and implements care of patients, including; EMR documentation, ordering additional studies, communicates with supervising Physician and additional staff, and prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Helps to counsel individuals and families about their health-related issues. Communicates individualized teaching plans to patients based on their needs.
  • Attends or performs rounds to assist Physician when possible.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Requirements:

    • Master's Degree in Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner required
    • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or American Association of Nurse Practitioners certification required
    • Indiana Physician Assistant Committee or Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses of Indiana certification required
    • BLS and ACLS required
    • 1-2 years of related experience preferred
