Risk and Safety Specialist

The Risk and Safety Specialist is responsible for the coordination of claim administration, health, risk, and safety disciplines for Indy Go. Core responsibilities include data entry for accidents, scheduling and reviewing video, submitting claims to Indy Go's third-party administrator (TPA), and the reporting and tracking of OSHA injuries. The position also evaluates, monitors, tracks risk and safety performance, and assists in the development of training procedures.

This position is responsible for administering safety standards and procedures for protecting employees' safety and health. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the day-to-day administration and monitoring of Indy Go's Safety Management System (SMS), the Indy Go Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP), monitoring driver's license status, customer comments and safety concerns, and assisting with the Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol programs.

  • Ability to investigate, recommend, and report on claims/ incidents/ accidents without bias.
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits for the corporation and contracted vendors.
  • Investigation and reporting of near-miss safety submissions.
  • Receive and disseminate safety information through newsletters, online, and bulletin boards.
  • Assist with National Transit Data (NTD) monthly reporting.
  • Assist with tracking the Safe Driving Awards program by the National Safety Council.
  • Assist during emergency response events and drills.
  • Collaborate on the development and updating of worker safety protocols.
  • Assist with Driver Vehicle Record (DVR) checks for commercial driver license holders.
  • Assist with the administration of the Safety Management System (SMS) and Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) as needed.
  • Assist with risk and safety communication for new-hire orientations and yearly training as needed.
  • Assist with the administration of the DOT/FTA drug and alcohol testing program as needed.
  • Assist with OSHA, state, and federal reporting as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned in support of risk and safety department functions and the organization's strategic goals. Attend and participate in professional group meetings as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in either claim management, safety and Industrial hygiene programs, or risk evaluation and mitigation is preferred.
  • One to two years of experience working within a DOT, public transportation environment is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA-30 hour safety certification within the first 6 months of employment is required.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to use discretion in decision-making and exercise sound judgment in problem-solving.
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B requirements.
  • Fundamental knowledge of emergency response, planning and recordkeeping.
