Carpenter

The duties of the position include but are not limited to: CARPENTRY WORK

  • Incumbent must work closely with other Engineering Shops and Healthcare Engineers and be responsible for preventive maintenance, repairs, installations, alterations, and renovations that fall under the umbrella of the Building Maintenance Shop. Incumbent must independently apply skilled methods, techniques, and advanced shop mathematics to construct, install, repair, and modify a wide variety of structures. Work on projects such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and other miscellaneous items.

    Plan and complete work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying complex building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and other guides and codes. Apply a full range of carpentry methods in accomplishing complex tasks requiring construction of irregular sizes, shapes, and angles with precise fits and accurate dimensions. Select the appropriate tools, equipment, and materials needed at the worksite and determine how or what repairs need to be made.

    May use tools and equipment such as plumb lines, chalk lines, levels, dividers, calipers, marking gauges, framing squares, jointers, shapers, tenoners, routers, and lathes as well as common hand and power tools to do the work. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment. Use and assure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
  • With the general guidance of his/her supervisor, the incumbent must perform the more difficult carpenter tasks, requiring a finished appearance at journeyman level. Work in part consists of constructing installing, repairing, and modifying structural units that require close tolerance for fit and structural soundness (i.e., but not limited to building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, built in furniture, etc.).

    This includes the installation of steel and wood studs, metal framing, hang and finish drywall by taping, mudding, and sanding.
  • Install, make modifications to, or replace acoustic ceilings, floor coverings, floor and wall tile, wall molding, corner guards, restroom partitions and all types of composite finish materials. This also includes mounting signs, boards, cabinets, medical equipment holders, pictures and like objects to walls and other surfaces. Use, operate, maintain, adjust, and service tools common to the carpenter trade.
  • Set-up and operate a variety of wood working machines and tools. Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon with glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent performs intermittent hand sawing, nailing, and lifting large articles or assemblies; climbing on ladders of scaffolding, maintaining body balance; reaching and working on overhead items and for short intermittent periods, eye-hand coordination while working in woodworking machines as sanders and table saws. The Carpenter frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.

Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 100 pounds.

Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
