Mechanic / Bus Driver

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Transportation Department

Under the general supervision of the Transportation Director and the day-to-day direction of the Head Mechanic, performs mechanical work on the district vehicle fleet and drives a school bus. During non-driving periods and summer months, assists the Facilities Department with general maintenance and other operational tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical experience preferred and/or ability to demonstrate mechanical skills.
  • Ability to handle a large vehicle efficiently.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive a school bus.
  • Current DOT physical card.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must comply with Federal DOT drug testing requirements.
  • Must be a self-starter with a positive attitude requiring little supervision.
  • Owns and furnishes needed hand tools.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Satisfactory health conditions as dictated by the DOT and Iowa Department of Education, and as certified by a competent licensed physician or medical authority.
  • Visual acuity.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasional lifting, dragging, pushing, or pulling up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, climbing, or crawling.
  • Be free of impairment of the use of the foot, leg, hand, or arm, or other defects or limitations likely to interfere with the ability to perform mechanical functions and/or safely control a school bus.
  • Ability to depress the fuel and brake pedals with the right foot and leg, requiring up to 70 pounds of force.
  • Ability to exit the rear emergency door without assistance (approximately 3.5 feet).
  • Frequent repetitive hand movements and gripping.
  • Ability to walk 465 feet without stopping.
  • Ability to fit through a 2-foot by 2-foot emergency exit.
  • Ability to push and pull objects up to 75 pounds.
  • Physical work comprises approximately 95% of job duties.
  • Able to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Report to work each day clean, neat, and in uniform.
  • Able to climb ladders and work at various heights.
  • Able to work in confined spaces as required.
  • Ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
  • Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors.
  • Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, lubricants, acids, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and/or inclement weather.
  • Able to walk, kneel, bend, and twist to complete job responsibilities.
  • Ability to monitor radio messages while performing other work throughout assigned buildings and grounds.

Transportation Department:
Transportation & Facilities Director

Receives day-to-day work direction from Head Mechanic for maintenance duties and from the Facilities Director or designee for facilities assignments.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve-month work year with wages and benefits established annually by the Board.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy 411.7 – Classified Employee Evaluation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Must communicate effectively with other school personnel.
  • Will establish and maintain effective communication with riders.
  • Shall demonstrate efficient, effective communication with the public.
  • Must use appropriate radio communication skills.
  • Must complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and use proper documentation when driving a bus.
  • Must operate the bus and related equipment in a safe, efficient, and legal manner.
  • Maintains and enforces all provisions of the District's Bus Safety Rules for riders.
  • Completes assigned routes/trips safely and in a timely manner.
  • Must keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean.
  • Confronts emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.
  • Must keep public complaints regarding driving skills to a minimum.
  • Will work with the Transportation Director on complaints received from parents regarding discipline.
  • Will follow the preventive maintenance program for all department-owned vehicles.
  • Will assist the mechanic in keeping all department-owned vehicles in good repair.
  • Will complete paperwork as required by the district.
  • Review driver deficiency and check sheets and perform repairs as needed.
  • Keep tool and shop areas clean and neat.
