Overview

The IPD Police Dispatcher I/II performs dispatching duties, receives and processes routine and emergency calls, and coordinates with police and other public service entities. This role uses various automated law enforcement information systems and may assist in training less experienced personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Receive and process routine non-emergency and emergency calls; dispatch police and other public service entities as required.
  • Enter, retrieve, analyze, and use data from automated law enforcement information systems; coordinate with other emergency service providers as appropriate.
  • Screen incoming calls to determine necessity, priority, and type of response; interpret level of service needed from field officers or citizens; maintain professional, customer-service demeanor; respond to questions and concerns from the public, department staff, and other agencies.
  • Maintain a computer log of service requests, information received, and actions taken; prepare reports and records; coordinate multi-agency responses; monitor and relay information to field units; transfer calls to appropriate agencies when warranted.
  • Monitor security for the police station, radio sites, and other city properties; respond to emergencies and maintain calm communications during tense situations.
  • Establish positive working relationships with coworkers, other departments, outside agencies, community organizations, and the public; represent the department on work groups or committees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including standby in other dispatch posts and potential court appearances when subpoenaed.
Distinguishing Characteristics

IPD Police Dispatcher I — entry-level in the IPD dispatcher series; learns routine and less complex assignments under supervision with progression to higher levels after gaining proficiency.

IPD Police Dispatcher II — journey level; independently performs full scope of dispatch duties with minimal supervision; may provide supervision or training as needed; higher level is Police Dispatch Supervisor.

IPD Police Dispatcher I (Responsibilities)
  • Under supervision, receive and process routine and emergency calls; dispatch police and other entities; enter and retrieve data from information systems; coordinate with emergency providers.
  • Learn policies and procedures; use law enforcement terminology and cite code sections by number; screen calls for priority; maintain professional demeanor; resolve service issues and complaints.
  • Monitor radio frequencies; inform Watch Commander; dispatch and monitor units; respond to emergencies; maintain calm radio transmissions.
  • Maintain logs, records, and files; coordinate multi-agency responses; access county/state/federal data banks as required; provide information to other agencies.
  • Establish relationships with colleagues and external agencies; participate in team or independent work; represent dispatch services on committees.

OTHER DUTIES: may work in other dispatch posts; may be called to testify in court; perform other related duties as assigned.

IPD Police Dispatcher II (Responsibilities)
  • Under general supervision, process routine and emergency calls; dispatch entities; assist in training less experienced personnel.
  • Independently perform full scope of duties; apply sound judgment regarding scope of authority.
  • Maintain logs, monitor radio, coordinate multi-agency responses; respond to emergencies; ensure accurate data entry and reporting.
  • Maintain security for police facilities and equipment; establish working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Other duties as assigned, including court appearances when subpoenaed.

OTHER DUTIES: may work in other dispatch command posts; may assist in vehicle releases on weekends; may be called to testify in court; perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervision

IPD Police Dispatcher I — Receives direct supervision from the Police Dispatch Supervisor; does not routinely supervise.

IPD Police Dispatcher II — Receives general supervision; may provide technical and functional training as needed.
