Position OverviewWe are looking for a heavy equipment mechanic that can inspect, diagnose and repair diesel-powered vehicles, machines and trucks, including forklifts and trailers to join our Indio, CA location.
Essential Job Functions- Daily review of incoming service repair orders
- Heavy equipment experience including planetary gear repair, pivot pin and bearing removal and installation, under carriage repair, cutting edge removal and installation, as well as hard facing and service of all systems
- Examine fuel regulators, emission controls system and timing systems to ensure all are in good repair
- Check batteries, lubricate parts and change oil as needed to prevent engine failure
- Inspect hydraulic systems, brakes, suspensions, transmissions, mechanical and electrical components
- Ability to diagnose hydraulic systems, replace hydraulic lines, replace packing and reseal hydraulic rams
- Ability to perform repairs on engine and transmissions (water pump, belts, radiator, air compressor, injectors, fuel pump, clutch, drive line, common rail fuel system, differential and emission system repairs)
- Perform inspections and repairs on forklifts
- Perform needed repairs in compliance with DOT regulations
- Record services and repairs to maintain accurate vehicle records
- Follow operating instructions, troubleshoot breakdowns, maintain supplies and help keep shop equipment operational
- Notify Mechanic Supervisor when inventory stock is low
- Escalate shop equipment repair issues to Mechanic Supervisor
- Perform 90‑day DOT inspections on trucks and trailers along with equipment safety inspections
- Ability to travel to various company sites across southern California and perform repairs as needed, including roadside repairs and/or repairs at truck scales
- Prior experience working in the field out of a service truck with problem‑solving and self‑motivating techniques that place safety as a top priority
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM’s) as needed
- Prior experience and certification to perform repairs on air brakes and hydraulic brake systems on heavy‑duty trucks and equipment
- Experience with welding, fabrication and cutting (mig weld, stick weld)
- Ability to run a cutting torch, air arc and lance
- Experience in electrical repairs and diagnostics including charging system, starting system, lights and the ability to read electrical schematics
- Ability to diagnose and repair A/C systems, pull a vacuum, pressure‑test for leaks and properly charge systems
- Other duties as assigned
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Vocational training in Diesel Mechanics or equivalent experience
- Certified in air brake and hydraulic brake systems
- In‑depth knowledge of diesel engine components and operational mechanisms
- Keen attention to detail
- Superior knowledge of maintenance tools and repair equipment
