Under close supervision, assists the Librarians with operating a Branch Library or division of the Main Library.
This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.
TASKS:- Provides reference services for locating information and documents utilizing the appropriate technology and resources within the Inglewood Library System.
- Advise readers, instruct, and monitor the use of the catalog system, online service, and public access to computers;
- Interacts positively with a variety of people in different situations in person and by telephone;
- Conducts reading programs, answers a variety of questions, and provides services on committees.
- Enforce library policies and procedures;
- Assist patrons/public in the selection and location of books and materials, and during reading or storytime sessions;
- Perform clerical duties in the Library, enter or search data and records in the Library database;
- Assist with preparing book orders; receive, enter, and catalog materials in the system.
Bachelor's Degree from a four-year accredited college or university and one year of work experience in a public library business environment OR seven (7) years of work experience in a library environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS- KNOWLEDGE OF Public Library operations, practices, and procedures, Modern office practices and procedures; policies/procedures/regulations related to billing and purchasing;
Library systems/theory/principles related to circulation, cataloging, Dewey Decimal System, inventory; - ABILITY TO organize and prioritize various projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner, follow oral/written directions;
Gather, read, analyze, and interpret data; exercise good judgment; post and maintain records accurately; maintain cultural awareness and perform repetitive duties; - SKILLED IN organizing and planning to ensure high productivity, utilizing computer databases to research, maintain, and update records and files, working with students, establishing and maintaining productive working relationships;
- PROFICIENT IN operating department office equipment, including computers and software, fax machines, copiers, scanners, and other specialized equipment, including industry-related software packages.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in an office environment. Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds
THE SELECTION PROCESSConsists of an application review to ensure that all applicants meet the minimum requirements for the job classification. A select number of qualified applicants will be invited to an interview with the Hiring Authority. All employment offers are contingent on a criminal background review via fingerprint submission for applicants over 18 years of age and provision of evidence of freedom from tuberculosis.
