Heavy Equipment Operator

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is a wholly‑owned business of Cleveland‑Cliffs, a leading processor of scrap metals. FPT seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator.

• Ensure adherence to safety standards, including use of required PPE, removal of hazards, and maintenance of cleanliness.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as wheeled crawlers, pedestal crawlers (Caterpillar, Sennebogen, Liebherr), forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweeper, and water trucks.
• Operate equipment in response to hand signals or radio commands.
• Load and unload materials from storage, production areas, docks, delivery vehicles, staging areas, or containers using equipment including magnets and grapples.
• Sort recycled materials and metals to separate high‑grade metals and remove non‑conforming metals.
• Load baler and shredder with grapple or magnet.
• Perform tasks involving physical labor with tools such as hand tools, torch, bander, saw zall, and wire snips.
• Perform daily inspections on all equipment as required.
• Identify scrap, its grade and type, and any undesirable elements within the material.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and empty gaylord boxes as required.
• Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping.
• Assist mechanics with maintenance of equipment.
• Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
• Perform other tasks and operate & maintain other equipment as required.

• At least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma or GED, or at least 1 year of heavy equipment operator experience.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor work on a daily basis.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work in an environment exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate, and changes in weather.
• Pre‑employment background check and physical and drug screening required.
