Mechanic Assistant Internship

Gertens Family of Businesses offers an exciting hands-on opportunity with our Mechanic Shop team! Get ready to build practical mechanical skills, work alongside experienced mechanics, and gain valuable experience maintaining and repairing company vehicles and equipment.

Inver Grove Heights, MN

Duration:
May - August 2027

Schedule:

Up to 40 hours/week

• Assist mechanics with maintenance and repairs on company fleet and utility vehicles
• Perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance under mechanic supervision
• Assist with service calls for vehicle breakdowns
• Conduct safety checks on vehicles and follow established safety procedures
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop, including proper care of tools and equipment
• Help maintain inventory of replacement parts and equipment and run parts as needed
• Work independently and as part of a fast-paced team
• Complete other duties as assigned by management

• Vehicle maintenance and repair techniques
• Diagnosis and troubleshooting of mechanical systems
• Experience with gasoline and diesel engines
• Exposure to hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems
• Shop tool, equipment, and diagnostic equipment skills
• Safety procedures and preventive maintenance
• Problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Excellent mechanical skills and an interest in vehicle maintenance and repair
• Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced team environment
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license and insurable driving record
• Class A driver’s license or willingness to acquire preferred
• Comfortable working in an active shop environment and performing physical tasks
