Deputy Sheriff

The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing laws, and maintaining order throughout Citrus County. This role emphasizes community policing by building relationships with residents, businesses, and organizations to foster trust and safety. Deputies respond to emergencies, conduct investigations, and ensure public safety through proactive patrol and engagement.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responds to calls, emergencies, provides assistance in a timely and professional manner to deter crime and ensure community safety.
• Develops and maintains relationships with citizens, victims, community organizations, and other agencies to foster trust and cooperation.
• Enforces federal, state, and local laws, including issuing citations, making arrests, and conducting field sobriety tests when necessary.
• Investigates crimes, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares accurate reports.
• Apprehends suspects and criminals using the appropriate level of force.
• Conducts wellness checks and dwelling, building, grounds, and personal property security checks.
• Testifies in court when required.
• Collects evidence properly in accordance with agency specifications and expectations.
• All CCSO employees are considered essential emergency workers and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations, including but not limited to, in-County and out-of-County deployments.

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the use of a 2-way radio.
• Ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations.
• Excellent problem-solving and prioritization skills.
• Ability to subdue and control people using the appropriate level of force.
• Knowledge of geographical jurisdiction.
• Strong keyboarding skills and working knowledge of computer software programs like Microsoft Office Suite.

Education, Experience, and

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of a certified Florida Law Enforcement Academy or Officer Training Equivalency program or Corrections to Law Enforcement program.
• Passing score on the Florida State Officer Certification Examination.

Supplemental Information:

• Exposure to high-risk situations and potentially dangerous environments.
• Work performed in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and rain.
• Requires long periods of standing, walking, driving, and physical exertion.
• Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Travel throughout the county is required; agency vehicle provided.

Requirements:

• Must be at least 19 years of age.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Valid Florida Driver's License.
• Good moral character.
• Must successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) as outlined in agency standards.
• If a current CCSO employee, no disciplinary actions within the last 12 months and completion of current position time commitment requirement.

• Demonstrates polite, helpful, and courteous behavior, respecting cultural differences, when interacting with the public and colleagues.
• Responds to supervision, guidance, and direction in a positive, receptive manner.
• Must be appropriately dressed and groomed.
• Reports to work promptly and properly prepared, notifying supervisor of intended absences.
• Acts in a professional manner, following established protocols and procedures.

An oral board with job-related questions and/or scenarios will be administered on a date specifically set with all potential candidates notified at least three days in advance of the specified date. The oral board passing score will be 80% or higher. The candidate with the highest score may be offered the position. The Sheriff reserves the right to make selections from internal or external sources.
