PCV Mechanic - Job Description and Responsibilities Rate of Pay
£23.80 per hour, plus overtime (O/T) rate.
Overtime is available and will be paid at the applicable company overtime rate.
Job DescriptionA PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of buses, coaches, and other passenger-carrying vehicles. The role ensures that vehicles are maintained to a high standard of safety, reliability, and roadworthiness
, in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and applicable legal requirements.
The PCV Mechanic carries out planned preventative maintenance as well as fault diagnosis and repairs to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and other vehicle systems. The mechanic also helps minimise vehicle downtime and ensures vehicles are available for safe and reliable passenger service.
Key Responsibilities- Carry out routine inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of buses, coaches, and other PCVs.
- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) in accordance with company procedures and required maintenance schedules.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair braking systems, steering, suspension, engines, transmissions, cooling systems, and driveline components
. - Diagnose and repair air and pneumatic systems
, including air brakes, compressors, valves, and associated components. - Inspect and repair vehicle electrical systems, including batteries, charging systems, lighting, wiring, sensors, and control systems
. - Carry out repairs and component replacement efficiently and to the required technical standard.
- Identify defects that could affect vehicle safety or roadworthiness and ensure they are correctly reported and rectified.
- Prepare vehicles for MOT/annual testing and other statutory inspections
. - Carry out defect repairs following driver reports, workshop inspections, or roadside failures.
- Attend vehicle breakdowns and provide roadside assistance when required.
- Perform road tests where authorised to confirm faults and verify that repairs have been completed successfully.
- Use workshop tools, lifting equipment, diagnostic equipment, and machinery correctly and safely.
- Complete job cards, inspection sheets, defect reports, and maintenance records accurately.
- Report additional defects, required parts, or safety concerns to the Workshop Supervisor or Engineering Manager.
- Ensure all work complies with relevant health and safety, environmental, and workshop procedures
. - Maintain good housekeeping and keep tools and working areas clean, organised, and safe.
- Work effectively with drivers, supervisors, parts staff, and other members of the engineering team.
- Support apprentices and less-experienced technicians where required.
- Help minimise vehicle downtime while ensuring that safety and quality are never compromised.
- A recognised qualification in Heavy Vehicle, PSV/PCV, HGV, or Automotive Maintenance and Repair
, or equivalent practical experience. - Previous experience maintaining buses, coaches, HGVs, or other heavy commercial vehicles.
- Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding abilities.
- Knowledge of modern vehicle diagnostic systems and equipment.
- Good understanding of braking, steering, suspension, pneumatic, electrical, engine, and transmission systems.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer repair information.
- Good awareness of workplace health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop team.
- Good communication, organisation, and record-keeping skills.
- A PCV/HGV driving licence would be advantageous where required for vehicle movements or road testing.
