The Position
An immediate position is available at East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD) Pardee Center location in Valley Springs, approximately 85 miles from EBMUD headquarters in Oakland. Treatment Plant Specialists operate, maintain and service water and wastewater treatment plant facilities and wastewater ponds located at sites surrounding the Pardee and Camanche reservoirs, and perform routine laboratory analyses of water, wastewater and related materials.
Responsibilities- Performs routine physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analysis on water, wastewater, industrial waste, and related materials.
- Sets up, calibrates, operates, maintains and repairs a variety of water and wastewater system equipment and instruments.
- Collects, analyzes, and interprets operational and water quality data; utilizes data and procedural guidelines to adjust operational systems as necessary to meet operational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Responds to alarms, system upsets or disruptions, and equipment failures; takes the necessary actions to maintain a safe, reliable, and regulatory compliant water, wastewater, and distribution system.
- Performs routine inspections and assessments of water, wastewater, and distribution system processes and equipment; recognizes abnormal conditions and takes appropriate actions to resolve issues.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs on water and wastewater system equipment.
- Observes and records field data and conditions such as flow, pressure, or level meter readings and other data relevant to sampling conditions.
- Collects and preserves representative samples for analysis from specified locations, from a variety of sources including, but not limited to wells, tanks, pipes, taps, and other appurtenances, according to schedule; utilizes instruments and equipment to facilitate collection and to capture field data; collects special samples as conditions indicate; assists in planning sample collection programs; prepares samples for transport, storage, and laboratory testing.
- Prepares standard chemical solutions and keeps laboratory facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
- Complies and records data onto standardized worksheets, logs, forms, and electronic devices, some of which may require calculations.
- Uses hand and power tools to make repairs and adjustments to equipment commonly used in water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Inventories and maintains an adequate supply of chemicals, reagents, and sample equipment at various EBMUD facilities.
- Observes standard safety precautions related to the work.
- Contributes to the creation and development of reports, plans, and procedures.
- Operates computerized instrumentation and equipment related to water and wastewater treatment plant system operation.
- Directs the work of other EBMUD employees assisting with field assignments.
- Assists laboratory technicians or chemists on specific projects.
- Operates motor vehicles in the course of work assignments.
- Utilizes automated or computer-based work management systems, or other electronic or computer systems and applications, in the course of work.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the operation and maintenance of both water and wastewater treatment facilities, and knowledge of applicable regulations. Competitive candidates will demonstrate initiative and ability to work independently and respond to routine and emergency conditions.
The Treatment Plant Specialist salary range starts at $9,752 per month, increasing to $10,240, $10,752, and $11,290 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.
Requirements- A high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Two years of experience as a water or wastewater treatment plant operator.
- Must possess and maintain a valid T1 Water Treatment Operator certificate (or higher) issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). Must obtain a T2 within one year of appointment.
