Overview

Work to provide local as well as statewide leadership and educational programming expertise in environmental issues related to livestock production, including manure and nutrient management. This position will have statewide responsibilities and will collaborate across work teams, institutes, and community groups, working with faculty, specialists, educators, commodity groups, and state agencies to advance the needs of the Institute clientele.

Responsibilities
  • Identify, design, implement, and evaluate research‑based educational programs that meet current and projected outreach needs regarding environmental issues related to livestock production.
  • Conduct on‑farm site and environmental assessments that assist farmers and agri‑businesses in implementing practices that reduce the environmental impact of land‑applied nutrients from livestock farms, facilitate regulatory compliance, and improve nutrient management.
  • Provide education and guidance on nutrient management and emergency plans, siting livestock facilities, manure hauling and storage, manure treatment technologies, composting, and odor mitigation strategies.
  • Develop, produce, and deliver environmental management outreach materials with messaging that is accessible and consistent with the Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute messaging.
  • Engage in collaboration with research teams, community members, and stakeholders to disseminate research‑based information through various methods.
Location / Work Environment

Space is available for this position at the Ionia County MSU Extension office. The position may be eligible for a flexible work environment, but an expectation to work from the MSU Extension County office remains; the ability and amount of work‑location flexibility are driven by the needs, responsibilities, and opportunities of the individual’s role.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to Animal Science, Agronomy, Agriculture Engineering, or a related field, earned by the date of hire.
