Utility Locate Technician
Location: Ionia, MI

Utility Locate Technicians are responsible for accurately locating underground facilities such as electric power lines, gas lines, and fiber optic lines. They observe, locate, mark, and document underground and exposed utility locations using multiple methods. Technicians are dispatched to locate and verify for utility customers and may work independently or as part of a team under a supervisor. The role requires focus, skill, and use of machinery and tools.

All employees are assigned appropriate technology and work vehicles to perform their duties. The company provides a company vehicle, laptop, smartphone, and all personal protective equipment.
- Locates underground facilities by using a transmitter and hooking up to a buried facility, pedestal, etc.
- Works in and walks over all types of terrain in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all weather conditions.
- Interprets job order tickets, blueprints, and maps to efficiently route and perform duties.
- Performs locates and emergency/on‑call locates during regular, overtime, and holiday hours as necessary to meet customer needs.
- Performs all work in a timely, professional, and efficient manner while effectively communicating and interacting with customers, co‑employees, and third parties.
- Communicates with management, contractors, and utility customers to ensure a damage‑free environment.
- Applies knowledge of technology and tools required.
- Works well with others in a supervised team environment.
- High School Diploma or equivalency (GED)
- State‑issued driver’s license
- Problem‑solving ability
- Ability to read, interpret, and decipher multiple types of prints
- Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
- Ability to walk/stand for multiple hours a day
- Excellent communication skills
- Background screening (no violations within the last 5 years)
- DOT drug test pass
