About CHRISTUS Children’s/Baylor College of Medicine

Located in the nation’s seventh largest city and the second largest city in Texas, San Antonio offers a pediatric population expected to grow an additional 30 percent over the next 20 years, offering an exceptional professional opportunity.

CHRISTUS Children’s serves as a focal point for pediatric services throughout the community and is a world-class children’s hospital – both inside and out.
In February 2013, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio finalized an agreement with Baylor College of Medicine. Baylor College of Medicine recruits, employs and oversees physicians.

At CHRISTUS Children’s, you’ll find an established legacy of care dating back to 1869 when the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word arrived in San Antonio and health care for women and children was transformed. Brought to the city by Claude Marie Dubuis, a Frenchman who was the Bishop of all Texas, three Sisters arrived in San Antonio to find a town plagued by a cholera epidemic and the remnants of the Civil War.

By 1891, the Sisters congregation had grown to nearly 200 and had established the Santa Rosa Infirmary.

The Sisters continued to care for the children of San Antonio throughout the 21st century, building the first and only hospital for children, Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, in 1959. The hospital became part of the CHRISTUS family in 1999.

CHRISTUS Children’s is the culmination of the vision of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and the CHRISTUS Health System leadership. The organization now employs more than 1,400 staff members, including a nearly 600-nurse team who earned Magnet designation in 2018 and was re-designated in 2024.
