SUMMER FELLOW (Resident Assistant) NEEDED!
The CCOM Office of Education Support is seeking Resident Assistants (RAs) for the 2026 Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) from May 28 – July 18, 2026, in Iowa City, IA.
Program Overview: Iowa’s six-week SHPEP is designed to help pre-health undergraduate students strengthen their academic foundation through preparatory science courses, clinical experiences, and community-based learning.
Job Description: The Resident Assistant (RA) plays a key role in supporting SHPEP students by providing mentorship, enforcing program policies, and fostering a supportive living-learning environment. RAs will alternate with their fellow RA in attending large lecture sessions with scholars to provide guidance and ensure engagement. Additionally, RAs will rotate on-call responsibilities for weeknights and weekends to provide support for students and address any unexpected situations.
Responsibilities- Provide supervision, mentorship, and leadership to SHPEP students in the residence hall.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive community among resident students.
- Assist scholars with homework and academic support needs.
- Enforce SHPEP policies, including attendance at mandatory evening events.
- Rotate with the other RA to attend large lecture sessions and provide student support.
- Rotate on-call responsibilities for weeknights and weekends to ensure student support and respond to any issues.
- Ensure the residence hall remains a safe, welcoming, and functional space.
- Act as a role model, promoting professionalism, responsibility, and respect.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the SHPEP Program Coordinator.
- Report incidents, concerns, or policy violations promptly.
- Plan and assist with residential activities and community-building events.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including room rosters, student check-ins, and material distribution.
- Attend and actively participate in all RA staff meetings and ongoing training sessions.
- Be visible, approachable, and available to SHPEP students on a consistent basis.
- Other duties as assigned by the SHPEP Program Coordinator.
- Housing: Single room in Petersen Residence Hall
- Stipend: $4,000
- Meal stipend: $600
- Must be a full-time graduate health professions student for the entire academic year prior to SHPEP and in good academic standing.
- Must live in Petersen Residence Hall from Saturday, June 6 – Saturday, July 18 to provide supervision and mentorship.
- Previous student leadership experience is highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster a positive community.
- Demonstrated interest in supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of undergraduate students.
- Must attend all SHPEP training sessions (dates to be announced upon hiring).
- Must be available 24/7 during the program for on-call responsibilities and activity support.
- Alumni of SHPEP or similar STEM programs.
- Experience working with undergraduate students from disadvantaged economic or educational backgrounds.
