Position: Central Service Tech I or II 3rd shift 100% - Downtown Campus

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Iowa Medical Center Downtown's Central Sterilizing Services department is seeking a full‑time Central Service Technician I or Central Services Technician II. This position will be located within the Downtown Campus. Under general supervision, the employee performs and has operational responsibility for sterile processing duties: decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, distribution of sterile medical devices, inventorying, stocking and distribution of medical supplies.

The technician provides functional supervision to student and Central Services Technician I staff.

Central Service Tech I
  • Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, store and dispense complex surgical instrumentation, devices and implant trays; transport contaminated and sterilized/high‑level disinfected devices following infection prevention practices and organizational guidance; operate reprocessing equipment including automatic endoscope washers, sonic washers, mechanical washer/decontaminators, inspection equipment and sterilizers; perform microbicidal processes, standard/transmission‑based precautions, engineering and work practice controls.
  • Perform infection prevention processes to remove all contaminants (blood, tissue, fluids, bioburden, etc.) from surgical instruments, utensils and other surgical items; handle large volumes of complex medical instrumentation, flexible endoscopes, delicate eye instruments, power equipment and different instrument patterns.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by adhering to standard precautions and infection control practices which include proper PPE, safe chemical handling practices, and body mechanics (ergonomics, human factors).
  • Access reference materials via computer systems, follow guides and instructions to assemble high volumes of complex instrument and implant trays; inspect and evaluate instruments for function and cleanliness; confirm all quality assurance mechanisms are in place; label, seal and document all items processed; use computer systems for locating, tracking and tracing medical devices and instrumentation trays.
  • Perform all aspects of sterilization, packaging inspection, equipment operation, safety procedures, proper documentation and prioritization; sterilize items per manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU); verify correct parameters used for all instruments.
Central Service Tech II
  • Serve as lead technician by demonstrating expertise in all central sterilization processes; identify operational concerns and take corrective action; assign technical duties to personnel and assume responsibility for accurately completing shift duties; participate in assessment and monitoring of staff competency, provide feedback and support to assist with performance evaluations.
  • Under direction of the CST II, perform all aspects of training within their area of responsibility and document employee training progress in training guides.
  • Decontaminate, disassemble, inspect, clean, sort and reassemble complex surgical instrument and implant trays; operate automatic scope washers, sonic washers, mechanical washer/decontaminators, inspection equipment and sterilizers; transport contaminated and sterilized/high‑level disinfected devices following infection prevention practices and organizational guidance; perform microbicidal processes, standard/transmission‑based precautions and engineering and work practice controls.
