Primary Duties
The Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum in the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) is seeking a Director for the Medical Student Counseling Center. This position provides direction and leadership to enhance the emotional and behavioral health and effective functioning of medical and physician assistant students by creating, delivering, and evaluating clinical and non-clinical/consultative programs and services. This position provides clinical counseling, assessment, and consultative services.
Incumbents in this job family are required to be a State of Iowa licensed mental health provider.
- Directs and provides leadership in the provision of Clinical Services and programs for the Medical Student Counseling Center (MSCC), including programs and services in the areas of mental health counseling, outreach and prevention programming and student disability and accessibility services.
- Lead complex risk assessment, intervention, and evaluation processes.
- Determines the psychological and behavioral needs of students, sets priorities for the provision of clinical services and programs, and allocates resources in line with the priorities.
- Evaluates services to determine areas for improvement and opportunities for innovation.
- Consults with staff daily to address clients’ needs and to engage in complex risk assessment.
- Design and implement programs and outcome evaluations.
- Oversees organization-wide services and programs, assesses quality and effectiveness in order to best meet organizational goals.
- May provide clinical supervision of students and/or licensed professionals.
- Provides oversight, training, and case consultation to senior staff therapists and to psychologists/therapists-in-training.
- Through clinical supervision and training, establishes best practices for mental health services and monitors adherence to ethical standards.
- May provide/deliver educational/training series.
- Teaches about counseling center services and mental health resources and shares information and expertise about mental health. Offers knowledge and guidance in assessing students at risk, coaches others to respond, and makes appropriate referrals.
- Apply advanced knowledge and expertise across disciplines to supervise and train staff and students.
- Oversees the delivery of prevention programming in key areas of mental health such as suicide prevention and reduction of risky use of alcohol and drugs.
- Provide complex consultations with systemic application that includes policy issues, processes, and triaging.
- Collaborates with the designated psychiatrists and/or the nurse practitioner to organize therapeutic services and to oversee coordination of care.
- Create, develop, and implement behavioral health training programs.
- Hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff; ensure staff are compliant with UI policies and procedures.
- Oversees the hiring, training, and performance development and appraisal of counseling center staff and implements policies to enhance staff engagement and productivity.
- Through clinical supervision, establishes best practices for mental health and disability services and monitors adherence to ethical standards.
- Develops and manages the center budget, allocating resources to services and programs.
- Develop policies and procedures, monitors adherence, and advocates for increases to the center budget as necessary to meet student needs.
- Develop revenue generation programs, including grants and ideas for cost reduction.
- Develop strategic plan elements.
- Collaborate with Assistant Dean to develop and implement a comprehensive CCOM Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Strategic Plan.
- Establishes and revises long-term vision and goals for the center. Develop policies and procedures for the center and monitors adherence.
- Designs, develops and continuously monitors the CCOM Mental Health and Well-being Promotion Strategic Plan in collaboration with collegiate leadership.
