Talent Manager, Employee Relations, HR Manager
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is seeking an HR Manager to work with a variety of academic and administrative units in the University’s largest academic college. This role serves as a strategic partner and operational lead on HR matters including workforce planning, talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, classification and compensation, and compliance. The HR Manager will provide expert guidance to departmental leaders and staff, support initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness, and contribute to a collaborative, service oriented HR environment.
The position requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate complex HR processes while fostering a welcoming and respectful workplace culture.
This position is primarily on-site, but may be eligible for hybrid work after the onboarding period.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate with CLAS HR leadership and associate deans to develop and implement college-wide HR initiatives.
- Conduct independent research, data analysis, and reporting to support strategic, data-informed decision-making.
- Serve as a strategic partner to collegiate administrators to help successfully meet HR needs at the department level.
- Support staff and faculty recruitment, retention, and workforce planning initiatives aligned with CLAS business needs.
- Serve as a consultant to leaders, administrators, and supervisors on HR-related matters, including performance management, professional development, FMLA, ADA, compliance, payroll, HR transactions, and recruitment.
- Conduct investigations, provide coaching, and recommend appropriate actions as needed.
- Balance and prioritize multiple ongoing projects in a fast-paced college.
- Monitor compliance with UI and CLAS requirements, including mandated training and annual performance appraisals.
- Bachelor’s degree in human resource management or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible human resources experience.
- Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply human resources concepts and best practices, to include knowledge of employment laws such as FLSA, ADA, FMLA, and other federal and state laws.
- Prior experience performing and supporting multiple HR functions including recruitment, performance management, employee relations, and compensation and classification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Certification in human resources, such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR.
- Experience with human resources functions, systems, processes, and policies at the University of Iowa.
