University Housing & Dining is seeking to hire a Custodian II to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment in all residence halls. Under general supervision, assigns, reviews, coordinates, and inspects custodial activities in the area of assignment in accordance with established guidelines.

• Performing front-line custodial duties.
• Receiving written and oral instructions concerning general custodial duties/staff.
• Developing work schedules and directing and inspecting daily work routines of other custodial staff.
• Assisting in planning procedures and work methods and advising or recommending revisions for the purposes of improving the efficiency of operations and services.
• Interviewing and recommending the hiring of custodial personnel as requested.
• Communication with supervisor, leadership team, and staff.
• Ability to perform all processes required by the department and use all equipment provided to perform duties.
• Maintaining records and inventory of multiple items including but not limited to time records, scheduling, staffing, etc.

Generally, hours are 7:15 AM to 4:00 PM
. Working every 3rd weekend with rotating Tuesdays and Thursdays off. May work occasional overtime to cover absences and peak periods of operation.

• Ability to read, write and follow directions.
• One year of custodial or related experience.

• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Driving Record Review Standards.

• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally.
• Knowledge of commercial cleaning techniques, surface characteristics, equipment, and supplies used to perform the position.
• Ability to move furniture and objects in preparation for cleaning; to load and unload trash receptacles; to operate and care for powered machinery safely and properly.
• Ability to clean, vacuum, scrub and mop for protracted periods of time; to work on ladders.
• Ability to move 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a variety of environments including crowded public areas and high and low-temperature areas.
• Knowledge of the safe use of chemical cleaning agents and possible hazards relating to environmental sanitation.
• Ability to lead, train and motivate employees.
• Ability to write and maintain routine records and reports such as employee attendance, supply usage, and needed repairs.
• Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.
• Experience performing labor-intensive work in a residence hall, apartment complex, hotel, hospital, nursing home, or similar residential facility.
• Customer service experience.
• Knowledge and the ability to learn basic computer and keyboarding skills; including the ability to access and draft email correspondence and the ability to manage electronic time accruals and personal absence requests. Previous experience highly desired.
• Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
• Ability to exhibit a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
