Sign‑On Incentive

Qualified candidates in our procedural areas may be eligible for a sign‑on incentive of up to $15,000. Current UI employees are not eligible for the incentive.

Overview

The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a full‑time (100%) Staff Nurse to provide direct nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic adult cardiac catheterization procedures. The nurse will maintain open and effective communication with patients, families/caregivers, and all health care team members involved in the pre-, intra-, and post‑care of adult cardiac catheterization patients.

Work Schedule
  • 4–10 hour day shifts with rotating day off (Monday–Friday)
  • Night, weekend, and holiday on‑call assignment
Duties
  • Provide pre‑intra‑post procedure nursing care (assessment, monitoring, intervention, and education) for diagnostic and therapeutic adult cardiac catheterization procedures, including angioplasty, coronary stents, balloon valvuloplasty, Swan‑Ganz/right heart catheterization, structural heart, and pericardiocentesis.
  • Transport patient to and from pre‑post recovery and/or inpatient unit.
  • Administer intravenous and oral medications.
  • Manage patients under procedural sedation.
  • Operate physiologic recorder and printer to monitor electrocardiogram and hemodynamic data, troubleshoot equipment issues, and initiate repair.
  • Operate intra‑aortic balloon and Impella, troubleshoot issues, and initiate repair.
  • Actively monitor patient during procedures (vitals, etc.); participate in life‑saving measures such as defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.
  • Ensure supplies are available in procedural rooms and stock as needed.
  • Demonstrate competency in angioplasty, coronary stents, balloon valvuloplasty, Swan‑Ganz catheterization, pericardiocentesis, intra‑aortic balloon pump, Impella, and cardiac rhythm recognition.
  • Apply nursing theory to assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses.
  • Collaborate and coordinate care within a multidisciplinary team and across units.
  • Perform patient care according to nursing diagnoses and institutional policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment.
  • Precept new staff at directions of the Procedural Nursing Manager or Procedural Clinical Practice Leader.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures set by the University of Iowa Health Care and UI Heart and Vascular Center.
  • Maintain professional behavior and appearance; demonstrate responsibility and flexibility.
  • Train and provide cross‑coverage for EP, CPRU, and procedural minor suites as required.
  • Participate in night, weekend, holiday on‑call assignment (arrival within 20–30 minutes).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, Diploma in Nursing, Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Master’s of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader, or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA).
Experience Requirement
  • Direct nursing care in a cath/EP lab, ED, telemetry, ICU, or procedural setting, including moderate sedation with hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Professional communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast‑paced environment.
  • On‑call assignment with arrival within 20–30 minutes.
Certification and Licensure Requirement
  • BLS certification by start date.
  • ACLS certification by start date.
  • License to practice nursing in Iowa by start date.
Desired Qualifications
  • 1–3 years direct nursing care experience in ER, ICU, cardiovascular care, or operating room within last six months.
  • Active enrollment in a BSN program if Baccalaureate degree not yet obtained.
  • EPIC experience.
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
