The Childrens and Women's Service Division is hiring a Nurse Clinician to serve as a clinical lactation expert. The role focuses on caring for lactation needs of NICU and newborn inpatients, providing safe, family‑centered care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of lactation plans.
Responsibilities- Provide lactation assessment, management, education, and instruction.
- Conduct consultations, facilitate rental or sale of lactation equipment and supplies, triage via telephone, and deliver prenatal education as needed.
- Offer post‑delivery consultative care covering breastfeeding, family bonding, and care planning.
- Coordinate and manage care for patients with complex needs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers, advocating for patients at all times.
- Evaluate patients’ responses to care and initiate independent or collaborative changes where appropriate.
- Facilitate care coordination across multiple disciplines, including home health agencies, referring physicians, and community support services.
- Optimize supportive services through patient visits, admissions, scheduled testing, follow‑up of test results, medical history collection, appointment scheduling, medication administration, and rehabilitation teaching.
- Participate in developing and implementing division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs.
- Apply nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems.
Minimum of 1‑3 years of current Lactation Consultant, NICU, or OB nursing experience.
Required Qualifications- Current Indiana nursing license by date of hire.
- Demonstrated expertise in a specific clinical area of practice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to obtain IBCLC certification within 1‑2 years after hire.
- Membership or involvement in professional organizations.
- Prior experience caring for NICU and newborn inpatients.
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.
- Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa.
