Overview
University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 100% Nurse Clinician to work for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and has held that designation since 2000. We also hold accreditations with the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and the Commission on Cancer (COC).
The mission is to decrease the pain and suffering caused by cancer in Iowa, surrounding communities, and around the world through improved cancer prevention and treatment based on research, clinical service, and education.
- Functions as a clinical expert and care coordinator for a specific patient population interfacing with administrative, clinical nursing staff, physicians and patients/families. Provides direct nursing care when necessary. Follows universal precautions.
- Independently coordinates and facilitates patient care between multiple disciplines within UIHC and local communities (including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services). Facilitates continuity of care.
- Coordinates patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visits and possible admission, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow-up visit appointments, provides medication, rehab. teaching, etc. Participates in ongoing management of the patient to facilitate discharge in a timely manner.
- Interacts with staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others in a professional and cooperative manner.
- Maintains clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.
- Develops management and consultant skills consistent with position responsibilities.
- Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.
- Promotes a positive work environment and demonstrates core values of service leadership: respect, communication, accountability, integrity, and compassion.
- Remains calm and constructive in conflict situations, listens and attempts to understand other points of view.
- Analyzes own performance in accordance with position expectations, develops goals and implements a plan to meet goals.

- Percent of time: 100%
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 07:00–17:00, varying hours of 8-hour shifts, no weekends, no holidays, with 2 required late shifts per 4 weeks

Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
- Reasonable nursing experience within the last 1–3 years is required
- Demonstrated expertise in a specific clinical area of practice
- Demonstrated experience with patient education
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated expertise with adult patient/family discharge planning process
- Experience working with an interdisciplinary team
- Ability to work well in a team
- Master’s degree in nursing is desired
- Oncology nursing experience within the last 1–3 years is preferred
