The Unit Clerk acts as a receptionist, communicating using good customer service skills with all persons. The Unit Clerk performs clerical duties and is also responsible for preparation and maintenance of the patient's chart including order transcription. Maintaining confidentiality and accuracy of patient records is an extremely important aspect of this position.
Essential Functions- Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Maintain medical records of patients on unit.
- Enter requests such as patient assignments into the computer, Optilink, or manual system in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Answer and place phone calls.
- Answer patient call lights and communicate information to nursing staff.
- Demonstrate effective time management.
- Maintain established inventories of supplies.
- Maintain an orderly environment at the nurse’s station.
- Assure smooth clerical operation on the unit.
- Adhere to WPH policies and procedures including dress code, code of conduct, customer service, attendance and submission of annual physicals.
- Utilize the computer for order entry and for ordering supplies.
- Verify stock supplies and prepare requisitions to maintain established inventories.
- Transport supplies and specimens and perform other errands as requested.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Previous work experience with some knowledge of clerical and hospital procedure preferred.
- Preferred previous experience with computer and/or office machines.

- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Ability to remain in stationary position 90% of the time.
- Ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption, attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time, attend to multiple tasks at the same time while maintaining accuracy.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Constantly utilizes/operates computer to access information.
- Ability to communicate to physicians and other hospital employees regarding requests for information.
